Sei Za

Basics

正座

Sei Za

The formal kneeling posture a class opens and closes from, and the one it holds mokuso in. The left knee goes down first and then the right, the feet lie flat with the big toes touching or lightly crossed, and the hands rest on the thighs with the back upright and the shoulders down. It is a posture and not a bow — the kneeling bow made from it is za rei. Standing up reverses the order, the right foot first, so that the body is never wrong-footed in front of the room it is facing.
