Mokuso

The silent sitting a class opens and closes with, held in sei za on the command "mokuso" and ended on "mokuso yame". The back stays upright, the shoulders drop, the eyes close or half close on a point on the floor a couple of paces ahead, and the breath goes long and low into the belly rather than into the chest. The hands rest flat on the thighs, as drawn here; some schools cup them in the lap instead, one palm on the other with the thumbs lightly touching. It lasts seconds rather than minutes, and the two of them are not doing the same work: the one at the start puts the day outside the door, the one at the end lets what was just trained settle before the day is picked back up. Sitting through it thinking about the next thing is the usual way of missing the point of it.
