Sanchin Dachi, or 'Hourglass Stance,' is a fundamental stance in Shotokan Karate known for its stability and rootedness. In this stance, the feet are positioned shoulder-width apart, with both feet turned inward at a slight angle. The knees are bent and turned inward, creating a strong, grounded base that resembles the shape of an hourglass. The hips are tucked under, and the spine is straight, promoting a solid, upright posture. The weight is distributed evenly between both legs, with a slight forward lean from the hips, adding to the stance's stability. Sanchin Dachi emphasizes internal power and breathing control, as the stance helps in strengthening the core and legs. It is used in training to develop muscle tension, balance, and a strong connection between the upper and lower body. This stance is often used in kata and is essential for practicing defensive and offensive techniques, providing a solid foundation for powerful strikes and blocks.
