Neko Ashi Dachi, known as the 'Cat Stance,' is a versatile and balanced stance in Shotokan Karate that emphasizes agility and readiness for movement. In this stance, most of the body's weight, approximately 90%, is placed on the back leg, which is bent and grounded firmly. The front foot is positioned lightly on the ground, with the toes pointing forward and barely touching the surface, holding about 10% of the body's weight. The front knee is slightly bent, and the foot is positioned in such a way that the heel is off the ground, allowing for quick pivots and changes in direction. The back leg is aligned in a natural and relaxed position, providing a strong base while maintaining flexibility. This stance enables rapid shifts in balance, making it ideal for defensive movements and counterattacks. Neko Ashi Dachi is often used to evade attacks and create openings for strikes, emphasizing the principles of balance, speed, and fluidity in movement. It is a critical stance for maintaining control of the body's center of gravity and for executing precise and effective techniques in both kata and kumite.
