Ritsu Rei

The standing bow, made on stepping onto the mat and to a partner before and after every practice. The heels come together, the hands slide down the front of the thighs, and the body inclines about thirty degrees while the eyes stay on the person bowed to. Judo begins and ends with rei. It is graded at the first belt and at the last, because a technique performed without it is not judo.
