黙想

Mokuso

The silent sitting a practice opens and closes with, held kneeling in seiza on the command "mokuso" and ended on "mokuso yame", before the kneeling bow is made. The back stays upright, the shoulders drop, the eyes close or half close on the mat a couple of paces ahead, and the breath goes long and low into the belly. It lasts seconds rather than minutes, and the two are not doing the same work: the one at the start leaves the day at the edge of the mat, the one at the end lets the randori settle before it is picked back up.
