How the hands take the jacket. The basic grip is the right hand on uke's left lapel at chest height and the left hand on the right sleeve near the elbow, the arms neither locked out nor slack. Kumi kata settles a contest before a throw is attempted: whoever grips first, and on their own terms, chooses which techniques are available to both of them.
