LX Wiffleball Rules
Equipment:
Bat
Wiffle BallTM brand yellow bats with no modifications are the only bats allowed. No tape is allowed anywhere on the bat. Nothing is allowed to be
inserted into the bat such as but not limited to: Glue, tape, rocks, dirt, water, etc.
Ball
We do not use a standard WiffleballTM; we use a Easton Practice Ball. Only Easton Practice balls are allowed. No other brand even if it looks exactly the
same is allowed. Any other type of ball splits in half after a few hits.
Examples of this ball are depicted above in the title bar.
Rules:
First and foremost I'd like to acknowledge that we have adopted rules that we found in a very successful league called HRL Twin Cities located at: HRL Twin Cities Website
- Requirements
- Must be at least 16 years old.
- Must be a guy. Sorry gals.
- Equipment
- Only baseball size Easton Practice balls are to be used.
- There will be four bases as First Base, Second Base, Third Base, and Home Plate, 45 feet apart.
- There will be an object strike zone, placed 3 feet behind the tip of Home Plate and measuring 20 Inches wide, 30 Inches high and 12 inches above the ground. The strike zone will be 42 feet from the pitching rubber, and 3 feet behind the tip of home plate.
- Only "classic Yellow" wiffle bats are to be used. There may be no modifications to the bat whatsoever.
- No gloves are allowed except batting gloves WHILE batting.
- Game Regulations
- 4 players (2 from each team) must be available to play a legal game. If a team cannot field
2 players they must reschedule at the discretion of the opposing team that did show up or suffer a forfeit.
- Teams may not have more than 6 players per team.
- Teams may have up to 3 players on defense. That is the pitcher and 2 outfielders. If a team cannot field 3 that does not
restrict the opposing team by the amount of players they can play on the field.
- Games are 4 Innings, using extra innings if necessary, 3 outs per inning.
- 12-run Mercy Rule will be used after 2 innings if one team is ahead by 12 or more runs.
- For darkness & rain purposes, games become official after 3 innings are complete.
- Stats must be recorded for each game using stat sheets provided by LX Wiffleball League
- Batting
- A walk is 5 balls
- A strikeout is 3 strikes
- No stopping potential strikes by leaning into them or stopping them with the hand, elbow or body.
- The pitcher is entitled to make this call. First offense will result in a strike on the batter. Subsequent offenses result in an automatic strikeout.
- No bunting.
- Throwing bats deliberately to distract fielders will result in an automatic out.
- All players present at the game will bat, but not all will play the field every inning.
- Batting out of order results in an automatic out.
- Pitching
- Pitchers must pitch from the mark located 42 feet from home plate. Beginning to pitch from in front of that position will account for an automatic ball.
- There is an enforced speed limit on pitching. Rules to be clarified soon.
- Pitchers may not dent or otherwise deform the ball prior to their pitch.
- The Pitcher may only have ONE ball in hand as he pitches and that is the ball he is about to throw, any other ball in hand is an automatic ball. Balls may be held within the pitchers pockets.
- No loading balls (i.e., putting rocks/sand inside the ball.)
- Pitching Rotations
- At least two (2), maximum four (4) pitchers may be selected for a game. These pitchers must alternate innings.
- One relief pitcher is allowed, this relief pitching may NOT be the alternate pitcher and must finish out the game in the previous pitchers spot.
- Base running
- No stealing or leading is allowed.
- Ghost runners can be tagged out by tagging their destination base before the lead "real" runner gets to their base.
- Tagging up is allowed. A runner leaving early can be tagged out at the base they left.
- If a batter is touched by a hit ball, they are out.
- Runners are awarded one base on a throw that goes out of play. On a bad throw that does not go out of play runners may advance at will.
- Pinch Runners or pinch ghost runners are ONLY allowed in the case of injury of a players leg or legs. Bad cuts do not count.
- Ghost runners run as fast as the lead "real" runner.
- Fielding
- No more than 3 fielders may be in the field at any time. Players may come in and out of the game as many times as they want.
- Fielders may not run past the home run cones to make a catch. If they do catch it and are past the home run cones, it is still a home run.
- Fielders may jump from the in-play area before the home run cone to make a play but may take no more steps.
- Fielders may peg runners who are not on a base for outs.
- No gloves of any kind are allowed.
- Balls in play
- It's the pitcher's (defense's) responsibility to make sure the field of play is clear of extra balls.
- A batted ball that hits any ball or ball bucket in the field of play (fair territory) results in an automatic single. It is a dead ball, and all runners advance one base.
- If the batter is hit by the ball, he is considered out.
- A batted ball the strikes a ball in front of the plate within the 10' area is considered a dead ball no pitch.
- A hit ball is considered a base hit
- A batted ball lands past the "hit line" and the runner gets to at least first safely.
- The hit line will run from the back side of 1st base, straight to the back corner of 2nd base, then to the back side of 3rd base.
- Calls on the hit line will be made by the team on the field.
- A ball that lands on the hit line is the same as if it landed past it.
- A hit that lands on a base is not considered a hit and is considered a ground
ball.
- Any ball that lands on or past the hit line is not considered a ground ball.
- Any ball that is bobbled meaning a player on the field touched it and it touched the ground again.
- The batter reaches first before a ground ball gets into a fielders hand.
- Ground Balls
- A ball that lands in the ground ball area and is fielded cleanly by any fielder. (Fielded Cleaned means that is was picked up without the ball touching the ground again, you can bobble the ball as long as it does not touch the ground)
- A fly ball that lands within the hit line is still a ground ball and is subject to this rule.
- Ground Rule DOuble
- A batted ball rolls past the home run cones and is not touched by a player.
- A batted ball that is bobbled or touched by a player and rolls past the home run marker is considered a live ball.
- Home Run
- Any ball that flies past the home run cones in the air.
- Any batter runs all four bases off of any hit.
- A ball that flies past the home run cones in fair territory and then goes foul is still considered a home run. Its where it goes out, not where it lands.
- Errors
- No errors are tracked for record keeping purposes.
- If a ball is bobbled or bad plays are made, it is still considered a hit.
- Dead Balls
- A ball is considered a dead ball and a no pitch if the ball does not go past 10' in front of home plate. This should be marked with chalk or a spare base available.
- A dead ball cannot be fielded for an out.
- Balls that are in the area in the dead ball zone that are caught are considered outs, if the ball is dropped the ball is in play and the batter and base runners may run.
- Fifth Foul Rule
- A batter is considered out on their 5th fouled strike. If a batter has two strikes on him, he can foul 3 times before they are out.
- A pitch is a strike
- A swing that is missed by the batter.
- If a pitched ball strikes the flat surface of the board in any way.
- If a pitched ball is fouled off.
- If a pitched ball strikes the bat or batters hands in any way.
- If the batter interrupted a good pitch on its approach. Best bet, do not catch a pitched ball.
- A base runner is out if
- The ball touches any base runner and they are not on a base.
- They are forced out when a fielder tags the base they are moving towards.
- They are tagged out or hit with a thrown ball.
